This tree is found only in the Mojave Desert and the Joshua Tree National Park, both in California. The name was given by pioneering Mormons on the basis that the shape of the tree reminded them of the waving arms of Joshua pointing out the Promise Land. It is the largest of the yuccas and a member of the lily family.
