Although at first glance this appears to be a monochrome image, you’ll see it is in fact in colour. Taken late in the afternoon the hazy blue of the hills and mountains in the background contrast with the stark whiteness of the dry salt lake in the foreground. This is the lowest place in the Western Hemisphere at 282 feet below sea level. Even late in the afternoon the temperature at the time that this was taken in August was 116 degrees Fahrenheit!
